Overview

This one-day course offers a comprehensive introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), its applications within the mobile ecosystem and beyond, and the governance frameworks shaping its use.

The course begins by exploring AI’s foundational concepts, emphasising its dependence on high-quality data. It examines various AI techniques, fields and applications while assessing both the strengths and limitations of the technology.
 
A key focus is the impact of AI on mobile telecommunications and other industries. Participants will explore how AI is transforming mobile networks through automation, predictive maintenance, and enhanced customer experiences. The course also addresses key challenges faced by organisations seeking to harness AI’s full potential.
 
The concept of responsible AI is introduced, highlighting its benefits and practical implementation strategies. Additionally, the course examines AI governance, analysing how global organisations and governments are addressing regulatory challenges. Special attention is given to the EU’s AI Act and its risk-based approach, which is expected to be influential on other AI regulations worldwide.

Amr Hashem
Policy Director, MENA, GSMA

Amr has more than 30 years of experience in Communication Technologies with expertise in communication engineering, corporate strategy, and development policy.
As Policy Director MENA, Amr promotes collaboration between MNOs and regulators, advocating to advance new technologies such as 5G, NTN and AI, and facilitates the launch of new services through collaborative partnerships.
Throughout his career, Amr Hashem has held key leadership positions in public, private and international institutions, leading the development of Egypt’s telecom sector reform plans (2000-2008); Telecom law (2002); and negotiated international and regional agreements for trade in telecommunications, IT, and postal services.
Amr has led several projects including the acquisition of 4G licenses and improving the ecosystem for the development of digital infrastructure (alongside the World Bank, WTO, USAID, ISOC and ITU). He has served as a non-executive director and committee member Telecom Egypt and the Egyptian Technology Development Fund
Amr holds a PhD in Management of Technology from Nile University in Egypt, an MBA in Corporate Strategy & Economic Policy from Maastricht Schools of Management, Netherlands, and a B.Sc. in Communications Engineering from Alexandria University, Egypt.

Daniela Gutierrez-Torres
Training Manager, GSMA

Daniela works on the GSMA’s Capacity Building program and manages the delivery of training content to regulators and policymakers worldwide and leads capacity building partnerships with the World Bank, ITU, among others. Before joining GSMA, Daniela worked at the LSE Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa. She designed and delivered training to African graduate students to develop leadership and critical skills and coordinated the Programme for African Leadership’s wide range of operational and developmental activities.

Daniela holds an MSc in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and an MA in Theory and Practice of Human Rights from the University of Essex. Her interests and expertise lie at the intersection between social innovation, economic and social rights, and social development.
